Happiness List 04.21.11

Things that made me happy/for which I was thankful yesterday:

1. Eating okonomiyaki with A at lunch on a workday

2. Leaving the office before the sky lost its blue hue for the first time in awhile

3. Abundant warm sunlight when walking to and from lunch

4. A toasted everything bagel with low fat scallion cream cheese

5. Crunchy toasty onion rings from Burger King

(This is kind of like a "day in review" type thing, isn't it? Interesting how that turned out, considering my past failures at doing a "week in review" but it's not like I've kept up with this either.)

(Also interesting but not entirely surprising that it centers around food. But it's often the little things that make someone happy, right? I am really trying to focus on the positive instead of the negative when making these lists even though you could read it as "X makes M happy because Y (related item to X) makes her unhappy." Positive focus!)

Edited to add: I thought it had been a long time since the last time I left work before dark. Based on my last post, it was a week ago! Add to that the fact that I left work due to my eye during the afternoon on Monday and worked from home on Tuesday, and that's not that many days inbetween where it's been dark. But it's felt like forever.

Little Things

I've been reflective lately. Thinking about what really matters in life. I suppose this has been going on for awhile, intensified around the time I was hospitalized and some recent events (which I would rather not discuss on the blog) just have me thinking about time, connections and happiness. I'm trying a new thing where, despite all the annoying or frustrating or less than optimal things that can happen throughout the day, I'm choosing at the end of the day to think about the things that make me happy or for which I'm thankful. I think maybe I'll write about them here to (a) force myself to write and (b) keep myself thinking about the things that make me happy instead of the things that make me not so happy. I really believe it can make a difference to focus on the positive.

I'm not going to list out the obvious things (A, family, people in my life, being healthy, having a place to live and not lacking for food, etc.) because, while those are all things I am very grateful for, they would be the same things everyday. I'm going to focus more on the little things - those unplanned, sometimes unexpected, things that just happen throughout the day to make it better. It's not a complete list of every single thing that made me happy during the day - just the 3 or so that stand out when I ask myself at the end of the day: "what made you happy today?"

So today's "happiness list":

- I was able to go to the chiropractor/PT, which meant I got to leave the office before it got dark and just worked from home later.

- The sunlight was really intense as the sun was setting and shone directly on my office window. I basked in the warm sunlight for about 5 minutes while getting some stuff done and it felt wonderful.

- We opened this box of coconut vanilla macaroons that we bought last weekend at Stop and Shop. They were deliciously coconut-ty and so moist. I love macaroons.

What made you happy today?

Hotel Research

We're almost done booking our hotels for our spring trip, and it occurred to me during this process that this is the first time in 2.5 years that we haven't used Priceline to book hotels during our vacation. It's a completely different thought and research process than what we usually do.

Even though you can only choose location/star level on Priceline and have no choice of which hotel, we still do a fair amount of research. Through bidding sites, you can find out which hotels are likely to come up (based on other users' history), and then look up the current room rates for those hotels for your dates. This helps you figure out a good bidding price (especially with the number of rebids you have) and a bidding strategy. You can also read reviews on the possible hotels and see if you might want to try a different star level to get what you want. Once you bid, it's all out of your hands and what Priceline delivers is a surprise. But bidding, to me, is fun.

Choosing a hotel on your own is so different. You need to check recommendations, reviews, exact locations of hotels. There's a lot more research involved. I can't even remember the last time we did this type of research. Maybe we never did, since the only other trips on which we've chosen hotels, it's been through travel agents or we booked directly and knew where we wanted to be. (I'm not counting wedding hotels in any of this.) Thank goodness for the helpful folks in the forums on Fodors because over the years, they have given so many suggestions that it helped narrow things down a little bit. There are just so many hotels that the research can get a little overwhelming without someone to point you in the right direction based on their past experience.

We did think about Priceline for this trip, but there were very limited options and it was only available in 1 out of the 4 places we were going. It's going to cost us a little more this way (and we're paying in Euros) but we know what we're getting and where we're going. Priceline was the first place we looked since we had previously used it in Germany with no problems, but this time, it just didn't fit with what we needed to do. I can't wait to see what the hotels look like and cannot wait to finally be on vacation!

Day Trips

Ever since we planned our trip to Singapore a few years ago with an 8 hour layover in Frankfurt, I have been in love with the option of taking a "day trip" (a layover) when traveling.

When we went to Europe last year, we looked into the option of a day trip, but it didn't really work out since we only went to Amsterdam and Brussels and they weren't very long flights. It was much cheaper to fly directly on Delta. But the allure of a day trip hasn't disappeared.

We're now booking a spring trip to Europe and are faced with the same dilemma. Do we fly nonstop or take a day trip (or possibly 2 day trips if we visit different cities on the way to and from our destination)? I would love to visit a new city for a few hours, have lunch and take a walk before getting to our final destination.

The day trip is slightly more expensive (less than $50 difference for the lowest priced one, but if we go to Amsterdam, it would be more), but we would get to see someplace new. Is it worth it? What do we do? So many options! We need to decide soon before the fares go up since it's getting closer and closer to our departure date... but what do we do?

Recent Dreams

I've been having these really odd and long dreams lately. I don't remember all the details when I wake up, but they've felt long and they've felt very real.

Three nights ago, A and I were helping A's mom sell or rent an apartment. It was in this complex that was more like a campus with lots of grass and trees. For some reason we were making booklets to aid in our sale of the apartment and using photos of us in wedding attire. None of the photos were from our actual wedding, as we were traipsing through a wooded glen, but there was photo arranging, booklet assembly, talk of distribution, looking at it on the computer and discussing the plan to sell. It was very real.

Two nights ago, there was driving to or from Canada, a fork in a road, an easy path and a difficult path to drive on. For some reason, I think we were trying to get away from someone or something on the difficult path, but we ran into some very real driving obstacles and the bumps felt real. There were even toll booths!

Last night, the dream was chillingly real. I dreamed that a high school classmate had been shot. It was collateral damage to a drive-by shooting and very tragic. But the part that made it feel so real was that most of the dream was about finding out the news. There were rumors circulating on facebook, people posting questions and wondering what was going on and if it were real, people trying to get in touch with others for details. A lot of it seemed to happen on facebook. Of course, if this were real, it would be in the news and probably more certain, but it just felt so real.

The last time I remember having such vivid, weird and long dreams was a few years ago when I experimented with melatonin supplements in an attempt to force myself to get up in the morning. (As you can guess from my current lifestyle, I've had this problem for some time and can't seem to find anything that works.) I had to stop taking it because the dreams were too much for me. I think there were more nightmares. I have no idea what the dreams mean. Is it saying I've lost touch with people and should get back in touch on facebook? Is it as simple as a a choice between the easy path and the difficult path? Is this anxiety over wanting to find a great place to live? Does it mean I want to have another wedding photo shoot? No idea.

Twitter Switches

I haven't really found an iPhone twitter program that I like. I started with echofon, then switched to the official app, then to hootsuite, back to echofon and I just switched again back to the official app. I'm not really 100% happy with any of them.

Why did I switch again? Because my usual program is actually ubertwitter for blackberry. Which got shut down on Friday. And meant I needed to use twitter through iPhone and figure out which one was best for right now until they can get ubersocial up. With all the updates, it seems to keep changing how they work so I keep switching apps.

Here's what I want and got with ubertwitter. And they're simple things, not even the additional things ubertwitter could do.

1. Keep my place in the timeline. After I open a tweet it should return me to that spot and not send me to the top. Is that so hard?

2. Pull in updates periodically so I have a constant stream instead of multiple hour long breaks.

Any recommendations? Right now the official app is working best, but I'd love to find the "perfect" program.

Resolutions

I'm normally not one to make New Year's resolutions, but this year was a little different. The older I get the more I realize that I have to take better care of myself. Gone are the days when I was hideously underweight because all I did all day was run around and exercise. I know I've put on weight in recent years after my most recent ankle and knee injuries, but now that I'm mostly healthy it's time for me to really think about my future especially since it's not just me to think about. M always chastises me when I come home from basketball or frisbee limping or in pain. I never really brushed her off, but I usually just told her that it was part of the game(s) that injuries happen.

I guess since we're thinking about moving and starting a family, maybe I need to heed her warnings more and take a bit more care when I do out to play ball. Most of that comes from being in better overall shape before I actually do return to the courts. That's why I made the resolution to hit the gym every other day. It's early in the year, but I've kept up with it. Getting back in shape is important, not just to my ability to get back into basketball, but also for my future of being able to play with any kids M and I have. Maybe it's growing up, who knows. M is important to me. So are our future children that we'd like to have. No matter what we may plan, I'm no good to anyone if I can't move.

Panda dwellings

So, we pandas are picky about where we live. For the entire "living together" portion of our relationship, M and I have lived in high rises with door people, maintenance people, in building gyms, etc. We've grown a bit accustomed to the lifestyle and the general lack of things to worry about. Something's broken? Put in a service ticket and someone comes to fix it. Need a workout? Walk downstairs and use our gym. Getting packages delivered? No problem, our door people sign for them and store them for our return. Not only that, but the areas that we have lived in have been spectacular. Walking distance to work, walking distance to entertainment, walking distance to great food, walking distance to pretty much everything!

Now, however, M and I are in a bit of a conundrum. At some point in our lives we're going to want little panda cubs to raise and mold into our own images. However, the tiny dwelling we currently reside in would not suit that. Thus, we are on the hunt for bigger, better dwellings within to call our home. Our biggest question right now is whether to rent longer or buy.

The case for buying is quite simple. Interest rates are lower than they've ever been in our lifetimes, and there's really nowhere for them to go but up. However, we're running into so many dilemmas and questions that the process itself has become quite frustrating.

Do we go for a condo? That would allow us to keep our accustomed luxuries like a door person, gym, etc, but it would also mean that, on top of the mortgage, we'd be paying common charges for building upkeep that in many cases are equal to rent. Not only that, but we can't afford those glitzy condos in the super swank areas that would allow us to continue being able to walk to work, entertainment, or tons of awesome restaurants. Plus, if we want to have multiple children, and they're not the same gender, we'd need a 3 bedroom unit at a minimum, and we REALLY don't have the kind of money that any nice area would require for one of those.

If we don't get a condo, do we go for a house? A house would most likely cost less than a condo to buy, and it would offer us a lot more space and rooms with which to spread our junk. But houses are really only common in the outer boroughs, and even then they tend to be older. Most things I've looked at on the market within NYC were built some time before the Great Depression. Sure, people have remodeled and fixed things up, but come on, those houses are older than any of our relatives...

So then the question of where to buy comes up. Aside from cost and size, we need to make sure our new home is in a safe area and one with good schools. We really don't want to move with children so finding an area with excellent schools is very important to us. After all, what good are kids if they end up dumber than rocks? Of course, some of that will fall on us, but we can only do so much. Anyway, where are all of the good schools? Well, Battery Park City, but that's really expensive. Parts of Brooklyn and Queens are good too, but they're also expensive and also don't have too many places up for sale. So then we started looking at places just outside the city. Lower Westchester has very good schools, and the houses there are enormous compared to what we could get here in the city. However, are we really ready to move to the suburbs? We both grew up in suburban locales so it's not like we've never been through that before, but neither of us really feels ready to "settle in" to that type of lifestyle just yet. But with all things considered, that might end up being the best option.

So in the end, we're faced with some major questions. I would think that, based upon how little time we have to really look, do research, and pool resources, we may just rent for another year. With the way the economy is going, the interest rates don't look to be going up any time soon, and that would also allow us to save up a little more so we can maybe buy a nicer place than we'd be able to afford now. But no matter what we decide, I can almost guarantee that none of these headaches will be anywhere near as bad as when we actually have to move. That's something I'm definitely not looking forward to...
